A Medical Transcription Industry Association
(MTIA) survey indicates that nearly half of all the health care
industry's transcription workload is placed with outsourced programs
companies offer.
The percentage continues to climb as the
demand for transcription services is growing by an annual rate of 10%
to 15%. This is partly due in fact that outsourced transcription is
often more attractive from a financial and productivity stand-point
than hiring, retaining and paying domestic trained and certified staff.
A big trend with many providers of medical
transcriptions is to outsource the documents to oversee companies
instead of hiring local transcriptionists. In fact, the Association of
Medical Transcriptionists (AAMT) estimates that 8% to 10% of the
outsourced transcription is now being sent overseas. However,
outsourcing these services overseas is risky - those who have done so
have encountered numerous quality problems, suggesting that a large
number of offshore transcriptionists have language barriers or do not
have adequate training or transcription and medical education. These
factors can compromise the safety and integrity of the documents being
transcribed.
